Numismatic continuity of Chera coins
2016-09-28 Wed
The Ancient kings of India were indeed smart! They kept the standard symbol constant on their coins, which makes it easy for us to identify them. For example, the Chera coins had a bow, arrow, and elephant. The Chera uniformly issued die struck uninscribed and inscribed square copper coins.
The coins are identified by the bow and arrow symbol placed on one side which, according to inscription evidence, was the emblem of the Cheras and on the other side the elephant surrounded by other smaller additional symbols around it. Typological influences are seen from Mauryan punch marked coins.
